What I like most about art in GIF format is that it’s an art form made just for us cyber wanderers of the internet. Those big fancy galleries can’t hang it on their walls and slap on a big fat price tag (at least for now); collectors can’t hide them away in their private estates for only the wealthiest of social circles to purr over. It’s a special kind of living art that’s all ours to share and enjoy right here on our own screens. Ironically, I’ve recently come across an artist who makes me wish I could buy his work from a gallery and hang it on my wall. But for now, I’m content just to share it with you and add it to the MessyNessyChic collection of ‘stuff that will charm your socks off’…
Oamul is a talented young illustrator and animator from China who brings his hand-drawn illustrations to life in these enchanting GIFs. His subject matter ranges from things he sees, hears and experiences on his travels and in his daily life to his favourite movie scenes (which ever so conveniently happen to be the same as mine). Of course, you might have already recognised the now iconic pink Mendl’s truck from Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel, and just below, Oamul has captured that beautifully silent scene from The Great Gatsby, where Gatsby waits for Daisy in Nick Carraway’s cottage as it pours with rain outside. Enjoy…
It’s hard not to love in particular, his “On the Road” series, including a GIF of a real-life bookmobile no less, which you might recall is pride and joy of a retired Italian school teacher who spends his time driving around 700 books to spread the love of reading to children. Featured here a little while back in number 5 of MessyNessy’s weekly 13 Things I Found on the Internet Today.
A self-portrait of our talented cyber artist. Take a moment to treat yourself and have a poke around Oamul’s website or Tumblr. You could also follow him on Facebook and have some of his charming work to brighten up your Facebook newsfeed.
