Browsing the Best Made Co., an independent store based out of New York, is a little bit like browsing a Wes Anderson movie prop list. Steve Zissou’s red beanie and survival kit– check; Moonrise Kingdom’s boy scout badges and campfire tools– check. Since it was founded in 2009 by Peter Buchanan-Smith, a down-and-out guy who had just lost his dog, his house (and his wife to a divorce), the former graphic designer has grown the online store into a charming selection of treasures from just one single product– a beautifully crafted axe. After his hand-painted axes landed their own exhibition at the Saatchi Gallery in 2010, Best Made Co. was formed, embarking on a noble search for fellow designers and manufacturers that shared the same care and pre-mass production attention to detail for making great things– kind of like the world of Wes Anderson.
